Selling longer life — or snake oil?

People who have lived longer have been shown to have had a balanced way of life.

The USDA says a balanced diet is the best diet for optimal health. Eating a balanced diet provides all the necessary vitamins and minerals your body needs on a daily basis. A balanced diet can also help prevent certain diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Some foods need to be consumed more than others to get the proper amount of nutrients.

Foods Groups

The USDA recommends that you eat
  • At least 5 to 7 oz. of grain products a day.
  • Two to three cups of fruits a day and four to five cups of vegetables to help get all the necessary vitamins you need.
  • About 6 to 8 oz. of protein a day and consume around three cups of milk and dairy products to help rebuild your body cells.

Limit Fat Intake

The USDA recommends that you eat fats sparingly. The amount of saturated fats you eat a day should not exceed 7 percent of your daily calories. Saturated fats and trans fats are commonly found in red meats, butters and fried foods. There are some fats called monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that your body needs for sustenance. Some fats found in fish oils can help protect against diseases such as cardiovascular disease.

Eating in Moderation

Even eating a lot of healthy food can cause you to gain weight. The Helpguide.org recommends that you do not limit yourself from eating certain foods. Banning certain foods from your diet can cause you to crave those certain foods more. Eat smaller portions by using smaller plates or by splitting your meal with someone else. The Helpguide.org also recommends that you measure out your food with measuring devices, such as measuring cups, to help control your portion sizes.

Health Benefits

A balanced diet contains all the nutrients your body needs to function properly. The USDA says grains contain the main source of energy for your body in the form of glucose, and it has a good amount of dietary fiber. Vegetables are high in vitamins A, B, C and dietary fiber. Fruits have a lot of dietary fiber, potassium, folic acid and vitamin C. Dairy products are high in calcium and vitamin D, which help grow and maintain strong bones and teeth. Meat products are the main source of protein that help regrow your muscles, bones and skin tissue.

Considerations

Speak with your doctor or dietitian for advice on how to construct your meal plan according to a balanced diet. Set up your meals the day before to help reduce stress about choosing what you need to eat. Avoid eating foods that are processed or have added sugars. The USDA recommends that you exercise for at least 30 minutes a day to help regulate your body functions. Exercise also helps protect against obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Hot to Colder Showers

I always loved hot showers.

The hotter the shower the better it felt on my skin. One time my husband burnt his back when he joined me for a shower (his showers though quite warm they were cold to me). Sorry babe.

It was a love hate relationship. The hotter my shower, the more body lotions and creams I needed to maintain a glowing skin.

Then 40's hit.

It got worse.

More body creams and lotions.

I am very dark skinned.

My skin was looking ashy (a white layer on my skin), flaky, painful and itchy.

After a lot of reading I found out that hot showers dries out your skin.
They also strip your skin of its natural moisturizing lipids and can cause it to become irritated and uncomfortable.

But it does make it better for when you're shaving.

So, this winter I committed myself to colder showers.

They are better for my skin, right? And, my hot water bill?

I started with my hot shower.

Here is a general outline on how I got started.

1. Get completely wet with a temperature of water that is comfortable.

2. Slowly reduce the temperature up to the point that you can barely stand it. Quickly expose all the parts of the body to this “cold” water including the top of your head and your face.

3. Now turn the water temperature down to the coldest tolerable setting. No matter how cold the water is, at its coldest, it cannot harm you in any way. The only thing stopping you from going to the coldest setting is your ability to confront the experience. Make sure all parts of your body get this “cold” water exposure.

4. Next time you take a shower turn the water to as cold as you can tolerate. But colder than your last shower. Again, get each part of your body used to this temperature setting.

5. Repeat the procedure every time you take a shower. Always begin with your warmest cold setting and end off with colder than when you started. Make the temperatures cold as you can tolerate.

6. Before long you will be enjoying colder showers just as much as a warm shower.

Tips for Success

You may be more sensitive to temperature when recovering from an injury or fighting off an illness. You're not trying to win any competition by proving how cold you can take the water. This can be done with moderate temperatures. Listen to your body, if you feel you need to stop at any time just do it.

You can use cold showers to "get into gear" in the morning or, at the end of the day.
Whatever works for you.

It took me about two weeks.
But now I enjoy much colder showers. Once in a while I take a hot shower but they are not as hot.

And my body cream is lasting longer.

Lemon Water Benefits Detox | BlackDoctor

Lemon Water Benefits Detox | BlackDoctor

Two reasons why you should add lemon juice in your water before you head out for a workout:
It's a natural energizer: It hydrates and oxygenates the body so it feels revitalized and refreshed.
It's cleansing: The citric acid in lemons helps maximize enzyme function, which stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification. We all sweat when exercising. If your water has lemon juice, the cleansing is happening without trying at all.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter:

History
Accounts from as early as Cleopatra's Egypt speak of caravan bearing clay jars of valuable shea butter for cosmetic use. The funeral beds of early kings were carved in wood of shea trees. Shea butter's skin care and healing properties were first harnessed thousands of years ago. The history of shea as a precious commodity can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, where shea butter was and continues to be used to protect the hair and skin against the fierce sun and the hot dry winds of African deserts and savannah.

Great skin moisturizer. How does it work?
Shea butter has been used to help heal burns, sores, scars, dermatitis, psoriasis, dandruff, and stretch marks. It may also help diminish wrinkles by moisturizing the skin, promoting cell renewal, and increasing circulation. Shea butter also contains cinnamic acid, a substance that helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays.
Shea butter is a particularly effective moisturizer because it contains so many fatty acids, which are needed to retain skin moisture and elasticity. The high fatty acid content of shea butter makes it an excellent additive to soap, shampoos, anti-aging creams, cosmetics, lotions, and massage oils. Its soft, butter-like texture melts readily into the skin.
Shea butter protects the skin from both environmental and free-radical damage. It contains vitamins A and E, and has demonstrated both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
How can Shea Butter benefit me?
Shea Butter can provide relief from dry skin to minor dermatological issues (if you have a serious skin condition you should see a doctor).
The amount of time required for optimum results may vary with each condition. Wrinkles, for example, require 4 to 6 weeks of daily use. Itching and dry skin is relieved immediately.
Shea Butter will provide improvement in all the conditions listed below.

  • Daily skin moisturizer
  • Dry skin relief
  • Skin rash- including diaper rash
  • Skin peeling, after tanning
  • Blemishes and wrinkles
  • Itching skin due to dryness
  • Sunburn
  • Shaving cream to reduce razor irritation
  • Small skin wounds
  • Stretch mark prevention during pregnancy
  • Minor burns
  • Eczema
  • Sun and wind protection
  • Even skin tone
  • Reduce blemishes and scarring
  • Preventing bumps after shaving
  • Reducing acne
  • Absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue
  • Helps restore elasticity to skin

How does Shea Butter benefit my skin?
Shea Butter nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E help maintain the skin and keep it clear and healthy. They are particularly helpful for sun damaged skin. They help prevent premature wrinkles and facial lines. Vitamin F acts as a skin protector and rejuvenator. It soothes rough, dry or chapped skin and helps soften dry or damaged hair. Shea Butter is high in unsaponifiables (a type of fat). Shea Butter has between 7-12% unsaponifiables. For comparison, avocado oil, a well known skin conditioner, has between 2-6%. This high level of unsaponifiables is one of the properties that makes Shea Butter so invaluable in treating the conditions listed above. Also, Shea Butter easily penetrates the skin allowing the skin to breathe and not clogging pores. Shea Butter has a high level of cinnamic acid, a natural sun screen. So, it provides some degree of protection from the sun. Shea Butter is also anti-inflammatory making it useful in treating rheumatism.
What can I tell by looking at the label?
Ingredients on the label should be listed in the order from the ingredient that is the most to the least. Therefore, you should look for Shea Butter products that list Shea Butter early on the list of ingredients. You should know the ingredients before you buy any Shea Butter product and should buy from a reputable source. The more Shea Butter in a product, the greater the likelihood, you will receive the full benefits of Shea Butter.
